When the NPD Group released their August figures, there was a little summer surprise for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Turns out that while Wii sales have slowed down a bit, the overall volume hasn’t really changed that much. That translates to good news for the PS3 and Xbox 360, as their sales have gone up while the Wii’s overall have gone down.
The sales figures breakdown like this:
- Xbox 360 – 356,700
- Nintendo DS – 342,700
- Wii – 244,300
- PlayStation 3 – 226,000
- PSP – 79,400
NPD says that August was the weakest month for the Wii since launch. Regardless of the downward trend, the Wii is still one of the best selling consoles of all time. I’d expect to see a spike in sales for the redesigned 360, particularly with the new Halo: Reach being released this month.

Sony may have already started to block the various methods of cracking the PS3 wide open, but that doesn’t mean release groups haven’t taken advantage of the situation. A quick search on any type of “release” site will reveal no less than 20 ripped and fully playable PS3 games.
I’m not in the business of telling you where to find these games, and I just looked around for the sake of doing a “did you know?” post. I don’t have a PS3, and probably won’t get one till Gran Turismo 5 comes out in the year 2025 November.
But the fact remains: the games are available. This, despite Sony’s best efforts to clamp down on the hacks hard and fast.
Here’s one of the nfos:
Says one of the nfos (from Battlefield: Bad Company 2):
This dump was made using the PSGROOVE (PSJailbreak) method using Backup Manager 1.0 . We have tested quite a few old PS3 Scene Rips which mostly didnt work correctly (empty/corrupted or missing files etc..). To warm you up until you receive your jailbreak device we’ll bring you a few PS3 exclusive and some major cross platform titles to get things going…
Like I said, I’ve already found 20+ games online, so this isn’t a case where there’s like one or two floating around out there.
Recently hacked your PS3? If you want to keep on playing those indie games, be aware that the next update will probably block you from doing that. This new update targets users who are using PSJailbreak and/or PSGroove. Sony’s severe actions against hacked consoles received mixed responses from the players; most of them of course hate the fact that Sony puts enormous effort in fighting hackers while they don’t listen to the users at all. Maybe it is time to focus on the Move that will be in the shops on the 15th and still looks like a dildo (the Move Shooting Attachment is cool though).
Sony, while reassuring that hacking will not be tolerated had no further comments on the matter.
“Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not be providing further commentary to this case. But as we always have, we will continue to take necessary actions to both hardware and software to protect the intellectual content provided on the PlayStation 3.”

PS3 mods are coming from everywhere now. The latest method is similar to the earlier USB exploit. Instead it uses certain handsets to do the dirty deed. The list of supported devices is rather short, but it couldn’t be easier if you have the right handset.
PS3Hax.net links to the compatability list and lays out the instructions.
- Download the package, extract it.
- Extract N1-CM6-PSFreedom.tar.gz and copy the contents to your SD card.
- Copy PS3-signed.zip and PS3-No-More-signed.zip to your SD card.
- Reboot into the recovery console.
- Install/flash PS3-signed.zip.
- Reboot your phone.
- Use ConnectBot or any terminal app and type:
- cd /mnt/sdcard
- su
- insmod psfreedom.ko
- Kill the power to your PS3, switch on the back (PS3 Fat) or unplug from the wall (PS3 Slim), and connect your phone via USB.
- Re-enable power and press the PS3 power button followed by the eject button in quick succession.
- Your PS3 is now hacked! You’ll see “Install Package Files” under GAME on the XMB.
To return your phone to normal just boot back to recovery and flash PS3-No-More-signed.zip. It’s that easy. Video coming soon.
Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy but remember, this may cause cops to show up. Your call. [via phandroid & PS3 mods are coming from everywhere now. The latest method is similar to the earlier USB exploit. Sadly, the aforementioned Australian importer OzModChips is a casualty of this little story, with all its shipments of the PS Jailbreak dongle seized (and the item subject to injunction) by an Australian court, but we suppose knowing its product has enabled the hardware hacking community thus might somewhat soften the blow.

Let’s imagine a scenario where somebody releases a bit of open-source code that allows you to run homebrew—that is, non-pirated software created by indie developers—on your PS3. Let’s imagine that the name of that software is PSGroove. The question is, do you download it, and do you go out of your way to run unsigned-but-not-pirated code on your system? How badly do you need PS3 homebrew?
It’s a question at least some of us will be asking in the coming days, as that very piece of software does, in fact exist.
Called PSGroove, the open-source implementation of the PS3 Jailbreak exploit does a few things differently. For one, you’d need access to a $50 (or so) microcontroller board—Teensy++, for example.
The software then only loads unsigned, but not pirated software. So, while you’ll be able to run, say, a PS3 port of mplayer or Fun Original Game, you can’t use it to hop on Black Cats and download the latest version of Madden.
Strictly homebrew, people.
Of course, the very fact that there’s already an open-source version of the hack, albeit one without the piracy features, could well mean that other, less noble folks are working on a full-on piracy-friendly version of the software.
One thing’s for sure: Sony is none too pleased with any of this.
